UNYIELDING FORTITUDE shifts focus to Xiu's mother, Jia-Li, beginning with her birth in 1948 to a respected military family in Beijing. The narrative follows her coming of age during China's Cultural Revolution, when her family is branded as "class enemies." Through Jia-Li experiences — from her family's persecution and separation to her strategic navigation of political pressures and her fierce determination to create opportunities for her children—readers discover the generational inheritance of resilience that would later sustain Xiu through her own crisis. This historical narrative provides essential context for understanding both Yue's cultural background and the inherited traits that would prove crucial to her survival.
